UNC head volleyball coach Joe Sagula has announced the team's 2002 schedule. The 2001 ACC champion Tar Heels will face six teams that advanced to NCAA Tournament play last season.
Carolina will open the season on August 30-31 by hosting the annual CAROLINA/NIKE CLASSIC. Along with UNC, this year's field will include St. Johns, New Mexico State and 2001 NCAA Tournament participant Wisconsin.
The Tar Heels travel to San Diego on Sept. 6-7 for the University of San Diego Classic to face Montana, Northwestern and San Diego, who made the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Coach Sagula's squad is on the road the next weekend as well at the University of Minnesota Tournament featuring 2001 NCAA Tournament teams Oregon State and Minnesota along with Ball State.
UNC opens ACC action on Sept. 27 at home versus NC State and follows it with a trip to Clemson on Oct. 1. A home weekend doubleheader against Duke on Oct. 10 and Wake Forest on Oct. 11 highlights October along with a visit from East Carolina on Oct. 15.
The Tar Heels begin their second round of conference matches against NC State on Oct. 22. They will have two weekend doubleheaders in November -- Nov. 1-2 against Georgia Tech and Clemson and Nov. 16-17 against Florida State and Maryland.
This season's ACC Championship will be held Nov. 21-24 in Atlanta, and the NCAA Championships first and second rounds will start Dec. 5-8.
The Tar Heels finished 24-9 and were 12-4 in the ACC last season. The 2001 squad also won it's third consecutive ACC crown and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships.
