Malaika Underwood records double-double with 17 assists and 12 digs.
UNC's Nicole Reis recorded 16 kills, and Laura Greene added 13 others as the UNC volleyball team defeated Charlotte in three games, 30-19, 30-20, 30-22, Tuesday night in Carmichael Auditorium. With the victory, the Tar Heels improve to 9-3, 2-0 in ACC action, while Charlotte falls to 7-4, 1-1 in Conference USA play.
Carolina outhit the 49ers .227 to -.031 for the match and recorded 45 kills to 25 for Charlotte. Malaika Underwood led the Tar Heels in assists (17) and digs (12), while Reis, Greene and Eve Rackham added nine digs apiece. Rackham also had 14 assists for the match and Aletha Green led the squad in blocks with five.
Courtney Burg had a double-double for the 49ers with 10 kills and 13 digs. Chanda Waller and Esra Akgun each totaled 10 digs, while Megan Mosness led the squad with 19 assists.
Reis recorded six of her kills in game one, including three consecutive kills that increased UNC's lead to 27-19. Underwood contributed eight assists in the game, while sharing time with Rackham who tallied six assists in game one.
Underwood was impressive in game two as well, totaling eight assists and seven digs. Greene had seven kills in the second game, including six as Carolina built a 23-13 lead. The 49ers made a brief run, but a Greene kill and a Green block helped the Tar Heels to a 30-20 win.
Game three saw Reis record eight kills and Rackham tally seven assists and six digs as Carolina won 30-22 and took the match, 3-0.
The Tar Heels resume ACC action this weekend when they travel to Wake Forest Friday for a 7 p.m. contest and Duke Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. match.
