Carolina Volleyball Opens Season With Win At Penn State Invitational.

Tar Heels defeat Loyola-Maryland in three games.

The UNC volleyball team kicked off its 2001 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Loyola-Maryland at the Penn State Invitational Friday night in State College, Pa. The Tar Heels won the first game by a 30-23 margin and followed with games of 30-10 and 30-8.

Junior outside hitter Laura Greene was impressive for coach Joe Sagula's squad, garnering 16 kills, hitting .419 percent for the match and leading the Tar Heels with 10 digs. Holly Strauss, a junior middle hitter, was also impressive, totaling nine kills on 13 attempts for a .692 hitting percentage. Strauss also led the squad with 13 block assists. Carolina's junior setters, Eve Rackham and Malaika Underwood, played great as well. Rackham had 19 assists in only two games, while Underwood totaled 18 assists for the match.

The Tar Heels are back in action Saturday, facing Villanova at 10 a.m. and the host Nittany Lions at 3 p.m.
