Powered by Laura Greene's 16 kills and 16 digs, the UNC volleyball team defeated Duke, 3-0, (30-28, 30-28, 30-24) Friday night in Carmichael Auditorium. The win gives the Tar Heels (18-4, 10-1 ACC) a two-game lead over the Blue Devils (16-3, 8-3 ACC) atop the ACC standings.
Nicole Reis had another strong match for coach Joe Sagula, recording 16 kills, including 10 in the third game. Eve Rackham led the Tar Heels in assists with 50 and totaled eight digs, as well.
Ashley Harris led Duke with 11 kills and 11 digs. Arielle Linderman tallied 36 assists for the Blue Devils.
Both teams hit outstanding in game one with Duke recording a .390 hitting percentage and Carolina hitting at .353 percent. Reis recorded six kills in the game with Holly Strauss adding five and Greene contributing four including three in the last five points to help Carolina to the 30-28 win.
Duke maintained a slight lead early in game two and led the Tar Heels 15-18 before two Molly Pyles kills and a Pyles block knotted the game at 18-18. The teams then traded points before the Tar Heels pulled out a 30-28 win.
Game three saw Carolina go on a 17-4 run and turn a 5-5 tie into a 22-9 lead. Duke battled back to within six at 29-23, but a Greene kill gave Carolina the game, 30-24.
Both teams hit well for the match with Carolina recording a .279 hitting percentage and Duke hitting .270 percent. Carolina totaled 61 total kills compared to 48 for Duke.
The win gives Carolina a 12-0 lead over Duke in the Carlyle Cup point standings. The Tar Heels have earned three points in volleyball, field hockey and men's and women's soccer so far this season.
Carolina is back in action Saturday night, hosting Wake Forest at 6 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium.
